In contrast to Bangkok’s recent transformation into a metropolis with some of the world’s worst traffic, and in defiance of the city’s conformity to the international trend for more and more high-rise towers, the Sukhothai consists of an enclave of buildings that vary in height from four to a maximum of nine storeys, all capped by simple pitched roofs.

Instead of one lofty tower, simple pitched roofs cap an enclave of four-to nine-storey buildings. In brass lamp holders terra-cotta frames, and wall hangings, the interiors repeat scenes from some of the nation’s greatest epics. The lobby courtyard’s reflection pond mirrors replicas of thirteenth-century Sukhothai stupas.

Long views of bold architectural symmetry and the artful use of teak, granite, mirror, glass, ceramic, metal and the finest Thai fabrics recall the palatial salons of the ancient capital. At the same time, the hotel incorporates the latest technology and comforts of the’90s.

Celadon : the Thai restaurant of the Sukhothai. Serving the finest Thai dished in both a natural outdoor setting and luxurious indoor appointments. There are a number of dishes on the menu you will not find in many other places, like the old-fashioned Thai hors d’oeuvres. Capacity : 110 indoor, 30 outdoor

Colonnade : overlook the water garden with the serene chedis. Dark granite and teak floors with high ceiling set an atmosphere of relaxed fine dining. The Colonnade is an informal restaurant offering the most varied of buffet tables for all meals and an a la carte menu with a complete selection of both Western and Asian dishes. Capacity : 106

Terrazzo : specialises in outstanding Italian cuisine. Decorated with Giacommetti-inspired scultures, guests may choose from air-conditioned comfort or al fresco dining next to the swimming pool. A Terrazzo speciality is a business lunch offering a selection of hors-d’oeuvres, a choice of main courses and a dessert buffet.
